Hoang Duong Cam

(Born in 1974, lives and works in Vietnam)

Fat – Free – Museum, Photography, 2006

Hoang Duong Cam’s Fat-free Museum first appears to be a whimsically irreverent work comprised of juxtapositions of the artist with well-known art and art places. But multiple layers unfold as the viewer begins to recognize Hoang’s clever interplay between viewpoint and relationship. By manipulating scale and perspective, Hoang produces photographic images that explore the connection between art and the viewer and how it can be transformed by challenging conventional viewpoint. To this end, Hoang invents humorous cameos via his ed fingers and muggings for the camera.

Apart from exploring the reinvention of identities, roles and perspectives, Hoang investigates the intertwining relationships formed by contemporary global development and outreach, particularly those in art. By sharing documentation of his interactions with art in Western environments and his introduction of Vietnamese images into traditionally Western contexts, Hoang uncovers harmonious unions between Eastern and Western depictions of art and culture, a result of very personal encounters during his travels abroad.

Born in Hanoi, Hoang Duong Cam graduated from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1996. Residing and actively practicing in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoang has shown his work in Korea, the United States and in Singapore for its first Biennale.
