Liam Gillick was born in London in 1964. His work is known for its combining elements of sculpture, design and architecture in specific gallery or other public contexts. Gillick’s artworks are meant to interact with the social, moral, political, and ideological forces in a given environment. Gillick defines art as “a convenient term for a mid-space location where you don’t need cultural permission to carry out certain corrective tasks in relation to society in general.”

He has written books, lectured and collaborated with other artists, projects that sometimes paralleled, and other times were independent of his three-dimensional projects. He has also created large graphics displays for public spaces, including a recent project for the London Underground. For Saigon Open City, Gillick designed the overall visual graphic, combining a semi-abstract orange and white angular border that subsumes the bilingual title within the partly expressionist and partly minimalist stylistic theme.
